Draupadi Murmu- The President of India At Present

The President of India at present, Draupadi Murmu, has many achievements on her lap. She won the Presidential elections held in July 2022. The 64-year-old present President of India, Ms. Murmu defeated the candidate of the opposition, Yashwant Sinha. She won 64 percent of the vote share in the elections and became the 15th President of India.

Born in a humble family located in a remote village of Mayurbhanj which is a tribal district in Odisha. Draupadi Murmu became the first Tribal President of India. She belongs to the Santhali tribe of Odisha. Both her father and grandfather were village heads under the Panchayati Raj System. Draupadi Murmu completed her graduation from Rama Devi Women’s University in Bhubaneswar. She completed her bachelor’s in Arts. After this, she started working as a Junior Assistant in the Irrigation Department of Odisha University. In 1994, she started teaching at Aurobindo Integral Education Centre in Odisha.

She began her political journey in the year 1997 when she worked as a Councilor in Rairangpur. Draupadi Murmu also served as the President of the Scheduled Tribes Morcha of the BJP unit in Odisha. She has also been elected twice to the State Legislative Assembly of Odisha on the ticket of the BJP party. She served as a Cabinet Minister during the years 2002- 2004 in the BJD- BJP coalition government led by Naveen Patnaik.

The President of India at present, Draupadi Murmu, has been making great strides in her political life since the year 2015 when she became the first female Governor of Jharkhand. She was the first tribal leader of Odisha who was appointed as the Governor of an Indian state. As the Governor of the Jharkhand state, she refused to give her assent to a bill approved by the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly seeking amendments to the Chhotanagpur Tenancy Act, 1908, and the Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act, 1949.

This bill gave commercial rights to the tribal members to allow commercial uses of their lands but ensured that the ownership of the lands remained with them.

Draupadi Murmu, the President of India at present, visited various states as a part of her Presidential campaign, seeking support as part of her candidature as an NDA candidate. Many prominent parties like BJD of Odisha, JMM Party of Jharkhand, Shiv Sena of Maharashtra, BSP of Uttar Pradesh, and JDS of Karnataka extended their support for Draupadi Murmu.

She is the first President of India born after Independence. That is why she said in her first address, she said, “I am the first President of the country who was born in Independent India. We will have to speed up our efforts to meet the expectations that our freedom fighters had with the citizens of Independent India.”

Pratibha Patil was the first female President of India. Ms. Murmu is the second President of India at present which is also a symbol of women empowerment in India.

Although Draupadi Murmu will be residing in the Rashtrapati Bhawan but as the President of India at present, she also has two lavishing residence-cum-offices in the form of retreats where she will have to conduct business once a year. The two residences are located in Shimla and Hyderabad in the north and south respectively. The locations were carefully chosen to signify the unity of the country even in its physical vastness.
